In music, performances in which instumentalists and/or singers attempt to make a work sound as it would have done near the time of composition. This is achieved by use of period instruments (or imitations), and by studying early instrumental and/or vocal techniques. In opera and dance, appropriate period stage-craft and visual design are studied and reproduced. It keeps musicologists employed.
